August 1 saw the release of two Hindi films that got extensive release and four smaller Hindi films. The two big-ticket releases Son of Sardar 2 and Dhadak 2 - are both spiritual sequels to successful films like Son of Sardar and Dhadak. In fact, Son of Sardar pipped a big ticket film like Jab Tak Hai Jaan and came out tops in 2012!
The no-show (yes, it's a no show considering the cast and the franchise-value these films bring) of these two sequels can be gauged from the fact that Dhadak in 2018 had an opening day of 8.71 crores; for Dhadak 2 it is a paltry 3.65 crores; almost one-third.
While many are attributing the no show to holdover releases - the blockbuster Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha, which is a surprise superhit. The fact, though is, both SOS 2 and Dhadak 2, are badly scripted. The screenplay lacks the fire that sets a film apart and makes it a blockbuster.
Dhadak 2 is marketed as a love story, but it is not; it is in fact covertly pushing a certain agenda instead of showing the love-story of the protagonists. If you get a chance, view the original Tamil film and you will know the fine act of balancing a love story with a social issue, rather than reducing a film to a blatant propogandist film.
Son of Sardar 2 once again proves that comedy is a serious business. Son of Sardar got it right because it was the remake of SS Rajamouli's, Maryada Ramanna. SOS2 is a remake of a Turkish film; but Hindi audiences are finding shades of Akshay Kumar blockbuster Singh Is King in the film.
Many trade-pundits are of the opinion that doing 75-crores for these films look a tough task, forget 100-crores!
