With the advent of social media, 'the young' are vulnerable like never before. Psychologists have increasingly been finding that most of the cases that they are dealing with about depression and anxiety in the youth, stem from their social-media engagement.
Things like likes, comments, views are increasingly bothering the youth - where does it leave the career - how does the young stay focused?
Keith, a psychologist based in Melbourne, Australia says "people hide likes, or their views or simply the engagement of their posts, these all are related to mental health issues that social acceptance is of supreme importance to them."
Bhaarat Bol News founder, Amit Kumar Agarwal told the writer, "I still vividly remember my meeting with the legendary, Dev Anand at his office in Bandra in 2006. After the tea, I took courage to ask him, how does it feel to make films that are flops for almost three-decades from the high, very high-point of being one of the first superstars of Indian cinema. He smiled and chuckled, Amit, remember, if there is even ONE-AUDIENCE in the cinema-hall to watch my film, I will make the film. That one statement has always motivated me to keep on making news."
Shweta a model said that today casting directors or modeling agencies don't look at your talent rather the followers you have, "which is grossly wrong, as many influencers have 'bought' followers. Are they really effective."
Shilpa a marketing guru said, "this is precisely the reason, that influencers are finding it increasingly tough to make the kind of money they used to."
Probably, these aspects are what prompted, Tisca Chopra (of Taare Zameen Per fame) in the recent past to make the statement that she is finding it tough to work with people and that today the first thing asked is the number of followers you have!
The latest to join the bandwagon is singer, Akriti Kakkar, she slams the obsession with 'million-views' culture. She says it's killing art.
There is no denying the fact that the views, likes, followers and subscribers are having an adverse effect on the mental-health of the vulnerable - the only mantra is, "as Dev Saab put it, even if there is one-audience, keep creating the art, content, films and news."
