Chikni Chameli, Is It Really Crass?

  • There have been very many instances where actors, singers, film-makers, comedians, become whole-heartedly a part of a project, only to retract later
  • The first thing that goes for such people, is unprofessionalism, because if you are not convinced, now, about the project that got you fame and fortune; you weren't convinced about the project when you took it up as well. So why did you take chance away from a creative, who was happily willing to do the project
With a huge, huge gap between demand and supply in the film, entertainment and media industry  worldwide - there are so many people willing and happy to do the roles; reason why in film, media and entertainment industry no one is indispensable!

Having said that very recently, Indian singer, Shreya Ghoshal made heads turn with her rant that she is embarrassed by her song Chikni Chameli; terming the song, raunchy.

Shreya said that she has sung a few songs that could be considered borderline raunchy, including Chikni Chameli, and stated that I see little girls singing these songs without understanding their meaning. They’re just dancing to them, and they come to me saying - Oh, we love your song. Can we sing it for you - I feel very embarrassed.

Points are:
  • The song is from a film certified by the CBFC
  • The lyrics are well understood by the parents
  • The film became a superhit, with families forming a chunk of audience-base
  • Most of all, the song added to your evergreen chartbuster number
So what is the problem; is it just for publicity for a show?

The internet was divided about Shreya's reaction though.

While a user took to social-media defending Shreya; another used shared Shreya’s clip and criticised her for her blatant hypocrisy - he said that Shreya was singing the same very song, Chikni Chameli - in a recent episode of Indian Idol; he further wrote "In a very recent Indian Idol episode, she sang this song herself and seemed to enjoy it. Hypocrisy really knows no bounds."

Another user added, "I have attended her two concerts, and she sang Chikni Chameli in both of them!" Another comment slamming Shreya read, “Bullshit, very recently she has sung a Telugu song and if anyone understands the lyrics it's just woman telling the man to use her body in the way he likes. It's all money driven.”

The debate on what is vulgar and what is not is perennial; and very many times serves as the perfect fodder for celebs, forever seeking publicity!
